It is extremely hard compared to other metals. It can have a hardness value of 1600 HV. This is very hard considering steel would be in the region of 160 HV a factor of 10 lower. Tungsten Carbide is a composite material with hard particles of Tungsten embedded in a softer matrix of metallic cobalt. Tungsten Carbide is cheaper than diamond and is also more heat resistant and so is used when it is necessary to machine carbon steel or stainless steel.
